He Fights For The Hearts Of His People
William Wallace as portrayed in Mel Gibson's movie "Braveheart" is a picture of a man who, like most men want peace and security in thier lives only to find that they must fight for what they want. He embodies the spirit of those who love freedom and are willing to pay the ultimate price for it. William Wallace was a true patriot and freedom fighter for Scotland in the thirteenth centrury. His love of country and devotion to the cause of freedom is what makes the movie "Braveheart" resonate with us in a deep spiritual way. Why is it that men are drawn to movies like "Braveheart"? What is it about characters like William Wallace? As men we are created in the image of God and written upon our hearts is the image of God the warrior, the one who will risk it all to rescue the beauty. We see this image of God clearly throughout the scriptures when He is described as the one who "fights" for His people and the one who "...breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron" (Psalms 107:16 NIV) to deliver his people. Though this movie is a man's movie, there is plenty of truth for women too. They too have the image of our creator written upon their hearts; this is the image of God that is adventerous, dangerous and alluring. There are two women in this story that women identify with and possibly desire to be like. To be alluring, dangerous and adventerous is what a woman wants just as a man wants to be couragous, strong and dangerous.
